Understanding W-4 Withholding
The amount withheld from each paycheck is your employer's estimate of your annual tax liability, divided across the year — but it's only an estimate, based on the elections on your Form W-4. A raise, a new job, extra income, or a change in deductions can all throw that estimate off, leading to either a large refund (money you could have had throughout the year) or a surprise tax bill.
This calculator projects your actual expected tax liability for the year — including a bracket-by- bracket breakdown, the Child Tax Credit, and OBBBA's above-the-line deductions — and compares it to your current withholding pace, so you know precisely how to adjust your W-4 to land close to breakeven.
How This Calculator Works
Enter your filing status, gross pay per period, pay frequency, current withholding, and any bonus, additional-job, or dependent information. The calculator annualizes your income, applies your selected tax year's brackets, standard-or-itemized deduction, Child Tax Credit, and any OBBBA above-the-line deductions you qualify for, then compares your projected total withholding — including a separate flat-rate estimate for bonus withholding — against your true expected tax liability, showing exactly how much to add (or reduce) per remaining paycheck via Form W-4, Line 4(c).
