Understanding Retirement Contribution Optimization
Between a 401(k), an IRA, and an HSA, most households have several tax-advantaged places to save for retirement — but each comes with its own annual contribution limit, its own Traditional-vs-Roth choice, and (for a 401(k)) an employer match that's effectively free money if you contribute enough to capture it. Getting the order and mix right can meaningfully change how much you keep, both in the tax savings you generate today and the balance you end up with in retirement.
This calculator brings all three accounts together in one place so you can see, in dollar terms, how a given contribution strategy plays out — including whether you're leaving employer match on the table, how much current-year tax you're saving, and what a Traditional/Roth split might be worth over time.
How This Calculator Works
Enter your age, income, and planned 401(k)/IRA/HSA contributions, along with your employer's match formula and your Traditional-vs-Roth preference. The calculator applies the current IRS annual limits for your selected tax year — including the age-50+ catch-up and the SECURE 2.0 "super catch-up" for ages 60-63 — to show your contribution split, the employer match you'd earn, your current-year tax savings from any Traditional contributions, and a simple projection of your Traditional (after-tax) and Roth (tax-free) balances at retirement.
