Understanding Your Income Tax Liability
Your total tax bill is more than just "income times a rate" — it's a stack of federal income tax (calculated on progressive brackets after deductions and credits), state and local income tax, and FICA or self-employment tax, each computed differently. Understanding how they combine helps you see exactly where a deduction, credit, or additional income actually moves the needle, and what your real take-home pay looks like after all of it.
This calculator also incorporates OBBBA's newest above-the-line deductions — for tip income, overtime pay, new-vehicle loan interest, and taxpayers 65 and older — which reduce your AGI before the standard or itemized deduction is even applied, so their benefit shows up regardless of whether you itemize.
How This Calculator Works
Enter your gross income, filing status, dependents, and any pre-tax or itemized deductions. The calculator applies your selected tax year's brackets and standard (or properly capped itemized) deduction, layers in the OBBBA above-the-line deductions, applies the Child Tax Credit, and adds state/local tax plus FICA (or, if self-employed, self-employment tax including the Additional Medicare surtax) to compute your total liability, take-home pay, effective rate, marginal rate, and a full bracket-by-bracket breakdown.
