Actual estate tax liability may vary based on asset valuation, state laws, and complex estate planning strategies. Estate tax laws are subject to change. Professional asset valuation and estate planning advice are recommended for estates approaching exemption thresholds.
Understanding Federal Estate Tax
The federal estate tax applies to the value of everything you own at death — real estate, investment accounts, retirement accounts, business interests, and life insurance death benefits among them — above a large per-person exemption. Most estates never owe federal estate tax because they fall under the exemption, but for those that don't, the tax rate on the excess is a flat 40%.
This calculator walks through the full computation: your gross estate, less liabilities, less charitable bequests, less any available marital deduction and remaining exemption, leaving a taxable estate that's then taxed at the federal rate — plus any applicable state estate tax.
How This Calculator Works
Add each of your estate's assets and liabilities, then enter your marital status, lifetime gifts used, planned charitable bequests, and any state estate tax rate. The calculator computes your gross and adjusted gross estate, applies the current federal exemption (net of lifetime gifts used) and marital deduction where applicable, and shows your taxable estate, federal and state estate tax, and net amount passing to your heirs.
